Product Description

Mezzanine edge protection is one of the most important - and most often overlooked - safety investments in any Irish warehouse with an elevated floor. Every year, falls from height remain one of the leading causes of serious workplace injury in Irish industrial facilities, and unprotected or poorly protected mezzanine edges are a primary cause. RackZone supplies the Troax mezzanine guardrail system - Europe's specification standard for permanent, code-compliant edge protection on warehouse mezzanines, picking platforms, and elevated walkways.

Built to Prevent Falls, Engineered to Comply

The Troax mezzanine guardrail range is independently tested to EN-14122 (Safety of Machinery — Permanent Means of Access, Part 3) and DIN-1055 (Action on Support Structures, Part 3) — the European standards that govern permanent fall protection on industrial elevated platforms. The system also supports compliance with Irish workplace safety obligations under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (Work at Height) Regulations 2006, which require employers to provide collective fall protection wherever there is a risk of a fall that could cause personal injury.

Two Protection Levels to Match the Risk

Different mezzanines have different protection priorities, and the Troax system delivers a configuration for each:

  • Full Mesh-Panel Protection — solid mesh infill between posts, preventing tools, small parts, packaging, and equipment from falling to the floor below. The default specification for picking platforms, racking mezzanines, and any elevated floor where dropped items would pose a risk to people or stock underneath. Available with Troax's standard ST20 mesh, the reinforced ST30 for high-impact zones, or the heavier UX450 and UR350 partition mesh for full structural protection.
  • Open-Rail Protection — horizontal handrail format providing the legally required edge protection without mesh infill. Suitable for staff-only access platforms, walkways, and mezzanines where dropped-item risk isn't a concern.

Three Critical Roles in One System

A properly specified mezzanine protection system does three things at once:

  1. Protects the workers on the mezzanine from falls over the edge
  2. Protects the workers below from dropped tools, parts, and packaging
  3. Demonstrates legal compliance with Irish work-at-height regulations

The Troax system delivers all three from a single specification — no need to combine multiple suppliers or specifications to cover off the full risk profile.

Don't Forget the Kickplate

A common gap in mezzanine safety specifications is the few centimetres between the bottom of the guardrail and the mezzanine floor itself — a gap large enough for a dropped spanner, dropped packaging, or a foot to slip through. The Troax kickplate component closes this gap, sealing the bottom of the protection system flush to the floor. It's a small detail that makes the difference between a guardrail that looks compliant and a guardrail that actually protects.

Where Mezzanine Protection Is Required

  • Warehouse picking platforms and order-fulfilment mezzanines
  • Multi-tier shelving and racking mezzanines
  • Distribution centre and 3PL elevated storage floors
  • Production facility access walkways and platforms
  • Pharmaceutical and food production mezzanine cleanrooms
  • Plant room and equipment service platforms
  • Cold storage and ambient warehouse mezzanines
  • Retail back-of-house and stockroom mezzanines

System Components

A complete mezzanine protection installation includes:

  • Mesh panels in ST20, ST30, UX450, or UR350 configurations to suit the application
  • 60x40mm posts providing the structural backbone of the system
  • Smart Fix fixings — Troax's proven mounting platform for fast, reliable assembly
  • Kickplates to seal the panel-to-floor gap
  • Guardrail accessories and fitting kits for assembly, corners, and integration with existing handrails

Important Installation Note

The strength of mezzanine protection ultimately depends on how it's fixed to the mezzanine floor — and floor condition varies considerably between installations. Floor fixing must be verified by the installer or customer, as the manufacturer cannot guarantee the quality of the existing floor substrate. For larger installations or specifications requiring engineering sign-off, our team can recommend qualified installers experienced with the Troax system.

Why Specify Troax for Mezzanine Protection

Most Irish warehouse mezzanine guardrails are bespoke fabricated jobs — built on-site, varying in quality, and rarely independently tested. The Troax system is fundamentally different: independently tested to recognised European safety standards, supplied as a complete modular kit with consistent quality, and backed by the brand specified across more European industrial facilities than any other guardrail manufacturer. For Irish facilities operating to insurance-grade or tender-grade specifications, that independent testing matters.
