What should you consider before choosing cold storage shelving?
Commercial kitchen operators, food manufacturers, hospitality managers, cold chain logistics teams and anyone storing temperature-sensitive goods in Ireland all rely on cold room shelving and wire racking for chilled storage areas. But choosing the best cold storage shelving comes down to five things
Space. Measure your cold room's footprint and ceiling height. Do you need fixed bays, or a modular cold room racking system you can reconfigure as stock levels change?
Access. Will staff pick individual items by hand, or do you need wider aisles for trolleys?
Hygiene. Open wire based storage promotes airflow and prevents moisture build-up, which matters for food safety audits and HACCP compliance.
Load capacity. Shelving and racking for cold storage and hygienic applications needs to handle the weight of dense, refrigerated stock without warping or corroding.

Why RackZone?
We're 100% Irish owned, rated Excellent on Trustpilot and we hold stock locally in our 80,000 sq ft warehouse in County Galway for next-day delivery nationwide. Every cold room racking system and shelving unit we sell comes with expert advice from our trained team.
Our galvanised shelving collection is built for environments where moisture, condensation and temperature swings are part of the daily routine. The zinc-coated steel resists rust and corrosion, making it a dependable cold store shelving option for walk-in fridges, chiller rooms, damp warehouses and outdoor covered storage. It's best for cold room racking where heavy, bulky items need secure long-term storage: boxed produce in a food distribution hub, dairy stock in a supermarket cold store or spare parts in an unheated garage.
We can recommend the right coldroom shelving for your space, stock and budget. Get in touch today.
Our HORECA shelving collection is made for hotels, restaurants and catering businesses that need hygienic shelving for cold rooms, caterers, food storage and front-of-house display. The chrome wire shelving for restaurants in this range combines food-safe materials with open-grid shelf construction, promoting the airflow cold rooms depend on to hold consistent temperatures and reduce condensation. HORECA shelving works best in commercial kitchens, hotel food stores, catering prep areas and anywhere subject to Environmental Health Officer inspections or HACCP audits.
Our chrome shelving collection offers a versatile, corrosion-resistant option for cold room wire shelving across a range of settings. The chrome-plated finish creates a smooth, non-porous surface that's easy to wipe down, resists moisture and meets the hygiene standards you need for storage shelving for a chiller or cold room. These units work best for lighter-duty cold storage shelving ideas: retail cold display, pharmacy fridges, smaller restaurant walk-ins and food service prep areas.
Weighing up your cold room shelving ideas and want a deeper understanding of what's involved? Our guide covers everything from material durability and corrosion resistance to load capacity, hygiene compliance and temperature suitability. It walks you through each factor step by step, helping you avoid costly mistakes and choose shelving that's genuinely fit for purpose. Whether you're a first-time buyer setting up a new cold room racking system or an experienced facilities manager reviewing existing coldroom shelving, it's the resource worth reading before you buy.

The legal requirement is that refrigerated food must be kept at 5 °C or below and frozen food at -18 °C or colder, as set out in EU Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 and reinforced by FSAI guidance. Food businesses in Ireland must also have a HACCP-based food safety management system that includes monitoring and recording cold storage temperatures.
Items that should never be stored in cold rooms are non-food materials such as cleaning chemicals, personal belongings, packaging waste and any substances that could contaminate food. Raw and ready-to-eat foods should also never sit together without proper separation, as this creates a serious cross-contamination risk under Irish food safety regulations.
The priority is to keep shelving clean, dry and free of debris at all times. You should position units so air circulates freely around stored items, store raw meat on lower shelves to prevent drips contaminating other products and inspect shelving regularly for rust, damage or instability.
The best materials are galvanised steel, chrome-plated wire and stainless steel, as all three resist the corrosion that constant moisture and temperature fluctuations cause in chilled environments. Galvanised steel is the most durable and cost-effective for heavy-duty cold store shelving. Chrome wire is ideal for lighter loads where airflow and visibility matter most.
The most effective approach is to group products by type and temperature requirement, store frequently accessed items at waist height for easy picking and label everything clearly to support FIFO (first in, first out) stock rotation. Keep aisles clear for trolley access and leave space between shelving and walls for airflow.
