People usually call it industrial shelving, longspan shelving or boltless shelving, depending on how it's built and what it can hold. It's normally made up of steel uprights and shelf beams that carry wire mesh, chipboard or steel decking, and it's designed for boxes and items you load by hand rather than pallets.
They both store things, but not in the same way. Shelving suits smaller items you can lift and load by hand: boxes, parts, general stock. Pallet racking is a different job altogether. You load and unload it with a forklift or pallet truck, so it's built heavier and set up with wider aisles to let machinery through.
There's no single fixed number that applies everywhere. It depends on your racking design, what you're storing, your forklift turning circle and any local fire or building regulations, so different systems and different sites will call for different clearances. What matters is getting that figure right for your setup, not applying a generic one. Always check the manufacturer's guidance for your specific system and, if you're unsure, get a qualified racking installer to look at your layout before you commit to it.
There's more than one option, and the right one depends on what you're storing:
Adjustable pallet racking: the most common choice, and it suits most palletised goods.
Longspan racking: good for bulkier items you load by hand Cantilever racking: built for long or awkward loads such as timber or piping.
Drive in racking: packs large amounts of the same product in tight.
Tyre racking: made specifically for storing tyres safely.
