Don't Forget the Kickplate
A common gap in mezzanine safety specifications is the few centimetres between the bottom of the guardrail and the mezzanine floor itself — a gap large enough for a dropped spanner, dropped packaging, or a foot to slip through. The Troax kickplate component closes this gap, sealing the bottom of the protection system flush to the floor. It's a small detail that makes the difference between a guardrail that looks compliant and a guardrail that actually protects.

Floor fixing must be verified by the installer or customer, as the manufacturer cannot guarantee the quality of the existing floor substrate. For mezzanine floors above 2 metres in height, edge protection is effectively a legal requirement. Even for lower mezzanines, the regulations require employers to assess the risk and provide appropriate protection — which in practice means installing compliant guardrails.
Mesh-panel protection prevents both falls and dropped objects, making it the right specification for picking platforms, racking mezzanines, and any elevated floor where items or tools could fall to workers below. Open-rail protection provides the legally required fall protection without mesh infill — suitable for staff access platforms and walkways where dropped-item risk is low. Most well-designed facilities use a combination of both.
The few-centimetre gap between the bottom of the guardrail and the mezzanine floor is large enough for tools, parts, and packaging to slip through and fall to the floor below. Dropped objects are a leading cause of mezzanine-related injury claims. The kickplate closes this gap, completing the protection system properly. We strongly recommend specifying kickplates on every mezzanine order.
