You probably know the garage. The one that started out as a workshop and slowly turned into the place where everything goes when nobody knows where else to put it. Things on the floor, boxes on the bench and a tool you bought twice because you couldn't find the first one.
When DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland came to Walsh Island, Co. Offaly, in September, we joined Baz and the team to help with a garage like that.
His pride and joy
The build was for the Harte family. Damien and Hazel live in Walsh Island with their three children, and each child has different additional needs. Over ten days, volunteers, tradespeople and suppliers came together to create a home that better supports family life.
Last night, the family's home featured in the series finale of DIY SOS: The Big Build Ireland on RTÉ One.
For Damien, the big shed in the garden was one of the main reasons he fell in love with the family home. It's his garage and his pride and joy. Indiepics, who make the show, asked us for some shelving and containers. We offered to fit out the whole garage instead.

Same garage, a whole new workspace
On Friday 4 September, RackZone arrived on site to start the challenge. Here's what they put in:
- A modular workstation along the back wall, with cabinets, drawers and a pegboard tool wall, so Damien has a proper bench to work at.
- Longspan shelving down the side wall for the bigger, bulkier gear.
- Interlocking PVC floor tiles, which snap together with a mallet and come 10 to a box, covering 2.5m² per box.
- Foldable crates that flatten down when they're not needed.
- Attached lid containers and euro containers that stack on the shelves.
- Tilt bins for screws, fixings and the small bits that always go missing.
- Wall-Zone accessories, so tools hang on the wall where you can see them.
The rule we work to
Ciaran Duffy, our Director, said: "Get it off the floor. Most garages we see end up with everything on the ground. You lose half the space and spend more time hunting for something than using it. Once every item has a home on the wall or a shelf, you can see what you've got the minute you open the door."
If you're sorting your own, clear the floor first and work up the walls from there. The bench and bins usually fall into place once the floor is clear.
It was a privilege to work on a space so close to Damien's heart. Our team were delighted to be part of the Harte family build, and we'd like to thank Baz, Indiepics and the DIY SOS team for having us.
